    Implantable Contact Lenses

woke up with 20/20 vision. 😍

so happy about my ICL surgery done yesterday at @asianeyeinstitute by Dr. Robert T. Ang. before getting it, i had worn contact lenses and glasses for the longest time while dealing with constant dry eyes & still having to squint to see things.

day 1 post surgery and my vision is unbelievably so much better. the process was quick & pain-free! i’m so, so happy. 🥹

    why ICL & not lasik?
    * there’s no need to worry about the occurrence of dry eyes. but in lasik, this might happen.
    * the lenses are permanent and there’s no need to maintain them.
    * it takes only about 15-20 minutes for both eyes.
    * the lens is used to treat: myopia, hyperopia & astigmatism
    * it can fix severe nearsightedness that can’t be corrected with other surgeries.
    * the lenses offer good night vision.

post surgery: will need to rest for about two weeks, wear goggles day & night, avoid working out & makeup. 🙂

And of course, expected natin, expected ko, na in a few months ay talagang, wow! Ang ganda na talaga ng vision ko.

Alam ninyo po, 5 years akong nagsuot ng eyeglasses. Bilang ako’y isang nanay na napaka-active, talagang sagabal sa akin ang naka-eyeglasses. It’s my choice na magpa-LASIK, magpa-eye surgery.  Kaya ngayon naman, sa wakas, ay nagawa ko na. Matagal kong panahon na plinano o pinangarap na magpa-eye surgery. Since nag-40 ako, talagang lumabo na po lahat. So it’s been 5 years na ako ay naka-eyeglasses. Ngayon, wala na at kitang-kita ko na kayo.

Kaya maraming, maraming salamat, Dr. Robert Ang, for taking care of my eyesight. Thank you very much, Asian Eye Institute.

    LASIK

    “YOU CAN’T SEE ME!”
NO, JOHN CENA. I CAN SEE YOU — CLEARLY! 🖐🏻👀

I’ve been wearing eyeglasses since 4th grade. I’ve managed to keep my prescription eyeglasses at 2.25 or less, despite my love of reading and watching TV series. However, during the pandemic, my eyesight deteriorated due to the 24/7 work we were doing for our COVID-19 operations in OVP and the 2022 campaign. With my small eyes, contact lenses are not an option for me.

I often struggle with the inconvenience of wearing eyeglasses; from having to take them off for photos to keeping them intact when running or moving around because it keeps slipping down my nose. Wearing glasses to parties has sometimes been a struggle, as well as having to pick an outfit that works with my eyewear. Now that I have the luxury to take a long leave from work after months (or years!)of doing heavy multimedia work, I have decided it’s time for me to reward myself with LASIK — to see things clearly, literally and figuratively. 😌

I chose @asianeyeinstitute as my go-to eye institute not only because it’s PiVOT’s sister company, but it’s the only eye institute in the Philippines that makes use of the latest generation Victus Femtosecond Laser and Teneo 2 Excimer Laser. With Dr. Robert Ang —a multi-awarded doctor, who was recognized for pioneering eye care solutions and treatments— as my doctor, I knew I was in the best hands.

I had my comprehensive eye exam a and had my FEMTO LASIK surgery last April 4th. The procedure was quick with minimal discomfort and no pain. After being given some eyedrops to take home, I slept and finally woke up with a 20/20 vision 😭

Definitely life changing! 😎💖 Thank you, Lord!

Believe me, this is the best life-changing decision ever!!!!

Finally, I got my ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery done to correct my vision. Never knew how it is going to be(as this is a new technology to cure astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia), but I was very clear on what to expect–20/20 vision without the help of contact lenses or eyeglasses which I have been wearing for more than 30 years. Now I’m living the dream with my brand new eyes! Thanks so much for working your magic on me, Dr. Robert Ang, the Chair of Refractive Surgery of @asianeyeinstitute! I can only entrust my eyes to you and to my whole Asian Eye Institute family, who assisted me with ease during the entire procedure!! I’m still recovering but can’t hide my excitement to see the world in a new light! #day1postop #implantablecollamerlens #milestoneunlocked #tgbtg #asianeyeinstitute

Eye See You!! 👀 Guys I can’t even begin to tell you how AMAZING air feels to wake up and see CLEAR AS DAY!!!!!✨✨✨ What a gift!!!! I have had eyeglasses since I was 8 years old and contact lenses since I was 11. My eyes over the years just got progressively worse reaching a high -5.50 🤓 I never considered corrective surgery because I was afraid but it came to the point that my contacts were always dry and itchy and causing me allergies. It was untenable. I decided to take the plunge and went in to @asianeyeinstitute to inquire about LASIK. After the screening they said I wasn’t a candidate and I was so crushed 😔 BUT they told me they had an even BETTER solution!!!! ICL! Implantable Collamer Lens! ✨✨✨ Swipe to see the videos of the results! To learn more, swipe to the end to see the amazing Dr. Ang explain what it is and why it’s an incredible option for those with bad eyesight like me. ICL is what pilots and athletes do! And today my vision is actually better than 20/20!!! Haha I have eagle eye 20/15! 😄 I am beyond amazed at the science of it all and the incredible service and professionalism of @asianeyeinstitute !!! I highly recommend a consult!!!

Underwent Implantable Contact Lenses Surgery (Phakik ICL) yesterday at Asian Eye Institute and I can now see clearly!

It was quick and I did not feel any pain at all. This won’t cause dry eyes as well.

Now I do not have to take off my glasses every time I take a pic lol

    LASIK

According to Dr Ang, my eyesight can still get bad if I don’t take care of it (he advised to take a rest every 3 hours of non-stop screentime) and there are other factors such as age. Also I have to now frequently use drops until my eyes are completely healed.

Did it deter me from having lasik done? No. In fact I would rather have it corrected now and have slightly blurry eyesight due to age than be completely reliant on my heavy eye wear.

First things first. Make sure you undergo proper screening test to evaluate if you are a candidate for lasik. If not, there is PRK and ICL as options as well (under AEI). My screening test took about 4 to 4.5 hours. So better allot a whole day in your calendar.

Anyway, I am happy that I had my lasik at @asianeyeinstitute. I was confident with their lasik devices and of course Dr Ang and his staff. They also give you full protective gear and will ask for an antigen test for everyone’s safety.

According to @americanoptometricassociation having 20/20 vision means you can clearly see at 20 feet what should normally be seen at a distance. You also have normal clarity and sharpness of vision.

    LASIK

I know the struggle of wearing
    contact lenses and eyeglasses.

If you have the means to eliminate it,
    then take it.

BECAUSE YOUR EYES ARE WORTH IT.

    July 26, 2022

    Eye grade yesterday: 300 / 300
    Eye grade today: 20 / 20

    BAKIT AKO NAGPA-LASIK ?

    Wearing eyeglasses for 20+ years.
Wearing contact lens for 10+ years.

I value my eyeglasses and contact lenses. Dahil dun, lumilinaw vision ko. Pero deep inside, alam kong mas gagaan ang buhay ko kapag hindi ko na sila kailangan suotin ever.

Matagal na ako nag-iisip magpa-lasik. Unsure lang ako because of so many things (safe ba, magkano, gaano katagal, etc).

    ✔️ BLADELESS
    Laser machine ang gamit panghiwa

    ✔️ 30 MINUTES OR LESS
Femto Lasik Procedure takes 15 minutes for each eye. Pero the screening time and the waiting time is a different story.

    ✔️ PENNILESS
After magbayad for the surgery, naging penniless na ako. Char. Make sure may savings ka, dahil hindi sagot ng HMO (Maxicare) ang mismong Lasik surgery. Masakit sa bulsa. But once nakita mo na ang result, it’s worth every penny 👌🏻

    I’m sharing this experience
because I know the struggle of wearing
    contact lenses and eyeglasses.

If you have the means to eliminate it,
    then take it.

BECAUSE YOUR EYES ARE WORTH IT.

    LASIK

    Life-changing update:
Less than twenty-four hours post-surgery and I’m well, and without any pain or discomfort. 🥰🥸 Thank you for your prayers and messages!!

For those asking via direct message, I have been suffering from migraines for a number of years now. And in my line of work, having very clear vision is key. Hence, why I decided to inquire about the possibility of undergoing LASIK surgery.

Upon the advice of Dr. Ang of the @asianeyeinstitute, who also happened to do my mother-in-law’s LASIK surgery over twenty-years ago, I was scheduled for the procedure. It took less than half an hour and was generally painless, with very minimal discomfort. I felt slight nervousness before the procedure, but Dr. Ang and his team were very thorough, and were specially reassuring during the procedure. I even asked “That was it?!, after. Everyone laughed and this made me feel quite triumphant!

I had my first post-operative check-up earlier today and I have been successfully given clearance to resume with my daily activities beginning tomorrow, but to limit screen time as much as possible.

Regaining my vision has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Do consult with @asianeyeinstitute for any of your concerns regarding vision, as you will be in very capable hands.

Thank you again @asianeyeinstitute for the great service!

Painless yung lasik as in parang 30 to 35 minutes tapos na ako and then no pain during and after nung surgery. Hindi lang talaga makadilat kasi bagong opera.
Pero the day after nung surgery, super okay na yung feeling.

I asked God for clarity and He gave it🙏🏼

Been wearing corrective lenses ever since I can remember (probably over 20 years) and it has been a love-hate relationship. No more contacts drying up or getting lost and glasses slipping off my nose to worry about. I feel limitless!! Ngl, it was not the most comfortable experience – I was scared with all the lights and pressure in my eyes even under the care of the best in the profession. But hell yea it was worth it! Thanks for the care @asianeyeinstitute and Dr. Ang. Made me tear up a bit when they said my vision’s 20/20 ✨🥲 tysm also to mi momma and @miguelchan23 🥰

Now for the real challenge – no sweating for the next two weeks 🙃🙃

    PRK

Procedure day, since I’m an adult na, unlike my papa na he had cardio clearance pa for his eye surgery, I did not. I was only required for their antigen nasopharyngeal swab test na inhouse na sa kanila. After almost an hour, you will have result na and if negative then you will proceed na to have the eye surgery on another floor.

Again, may mga ipapatak sayo and measuring pupil size. The procedure is very swift tbh, since gising ka naman I think wala pang 5 minutes, tapos na both eyes. Idk if I’m exaggerating basta it felt fast lang. Basta may tititigan ka Lang then it will blur then may parang wash lang then bandage contact lens and that was it, tapos na. Next eye na then voila tapos na malinaw na.

Sobrang nakakaiyak after procedure kasi nabasa ko Yung Asian Eye Institute clearly sa wall sa OR as in very sharp image talaga. I can’t thank my doctor enough talaga.
After nun I was instilled na with post op eye drops and a nurse will attend to you for post op care and baon mong eye drops.

    Masakit ba? Wala. Zero pain.

Uncomfortable? Yes yung sa pag dilate lang ng mata yung not comfy talaga. I thought nga mag tapout ako just seconds pagka higa ko pero nahiya ako sa doctor ko hahaha. Lakasan ang loob.

    [Post surgery]

Pain? Again there was no pain pain but it’s more of occasional sting lang na happened around day 2 post op. Tolerable.

Here’s the catch, you have to endure to be in a batcave for 3 days. Literally ayoko idilat Mata ko but I have to because of the eye drops na I have to religiously instill. May post op care instructions naman and it’s fully expected lahat ng nangyari sakin.

There were episodes of glares especially at night din. Things got better on Day 4. then Day 7. Pero contact lens will be removed by this time so parang lumabo siya ulit na gradually lilinaw pero unnoticeable na yung occasional blur after 2 weeks. I felt really happy na din Day 30 and sinabihan na din ako na pwede Na mag swimming by this time (Di ko pa naman ginawa haha).

*Note lang na you have to religiously follow the eye drops para madali healing mo and eat properly din and yung HYDRATION mo din in general affects din yung mata mo

Here is the post op progress pala of my eye grade based on my follow up check up:

    Day 1
    20/40 right
    20/35 left

    Day 5
    20/25 right
    20/20, 0.50 astigmatism left

    Day 7
    20/25 right
    20/20 left

    Day 30
    20/20 both eyes

    Day 90
    20/15

Nakakaiyak lang yung huling follow up ko kasi I never thought na grabe yung progress na maeexperience ko pala ganito kalinaw na mata huhu tuwang tuwa din sila Doc sa progress as in lahat sila happy na you’re exceeding pa the expected vision.

Verdict: I highly recommend Asian Eye Institute talaga. Well explained lahat. I felt really really safe. Very accommodating ang service nila be it doctors, nurses and other staff, high technology and strict sila sa appointments talaga kasi andami nilang patients and dahil dun ang hirap humanap lang ng parking haha. Kainis.

New year, new eyes! Documenting this milestone after 5 years of going from one eye doctor to another, I’m finally 20-20 ❤

Back story: I was born with what you call a lazy eye / amblyopia (along with the 2% of the population 🥲). My brain focuses on one eye and I rely on that for my vision. This makes my eye grade so extreme – left eye at 1,000 (the lazy eye) and 150 for the right, which increased further to 300 (stronger one).

Grateful for Dr. Robert Ang of Asian Eye and his team for giving me the best solution to my weird eye situation ☺

I still need to fully recover from the one month back and forth to the eye center but yay thankful for a successful eye surgery 🥰 🙌

    Operation Done ✔️ From 625/600, Eyesight now 20/20 👀

FINALLYYYYY. I’ve always wanted to do this but now’s the only time I found time. Had Lasik surgery yesterday with the doctor who operated on my mom’s eyes 20 years ago, Dr. Robert Ang. I felt comfortable and confident, having seen the effects on my mom’s life 20 years later. She was one of the first batches!!

Honestly didn’t plan this out but my mom told me to go to @asianeyeinstitute, at nandiyan pa pala si Doc!! Galing haha.

One of the things that assured me was the thorough testing I went through the day before to know if I was eligible for Eye Lasik. They measure all sorts of details about your eye: thickness of cornea, eye pressure, tear production, etc. All these details go through their tech, and once you’ve passed the test, these numbers are what the computer uses to adjust your grade in the operation!

If you don’t pass the exam, there are two other options: PRK & ICL. Google niyo na lang hahaha!

Since a lot are asking how it felt, nung una kinakabahan din ako sa operation, but doc was talking to me all throughout! I saw different lights, felt some pressure lang on my eye, but everything was painless! They used anaesthesia drops that were strong enough for me to not feel anything. The whole operation lasted 30minutes. Afterwards, when the anaesthesia wears off, medyo masakit lang ulo, may konting uncomfortability sa mata, pero mawawala din pag tinulog mo na. They use bladeless technology kaya until now, I don’t feel any pain. So amazed with how advanced the tech now is.

A day after.. my eyesight is a lot clearer, still a bit hazy as my eyes are still adjusting, but I already feel so liberated.

Thank you @asianeyeinstitute for being so professional the whole time and for making sure everybody was #COVID19 safe. The thorough exams reassured me that I was going to get the right diagnosis and prescription from the doctors.

The biggest bonus of all: me addressing my fears that the world would end at maubusan ako ng contact lenses 🤣😂 So for those who are thinking of doing lasik, it’s really a worthy investment! Can’t wait til everything gets 100% clear 🙂

Finally went back to the Asian Eye Institute for LASIK on my left eye! Already had it done on my right eye a few years ago, but at that time I was so scared to come back for the left. I was so anxious. It was all in the head, really, cause it happens so fast and you don’t feel a thing. So for years now, I’ve only had one good eye.  But I went back because I was starting to have headaches a little more often, and I found out that my left eye had already gone from 250 to 400+!  I’m soooo so happy to have finally done this. Dr. Ang is the best! He talked me through the entire procedure and it kept me calm. (And I was singing Whom Shall I Fear the whole time in my head, so it was easy peasy hihi ) Really looking forward to having better vision soon  Thank you so much for taking great care of me, @asianeyeinstitute!

    LASIK
Ever wondering what actually happens during Lasik surgery?
So I finally decided to take the plunge and have my eyes fixed. After hours of research I decided to go to Asian Eye Institute in Rockwell because I’ve only heard good things about them. For me, it seemed like a risky situation so I wanted the best. Seriously, the future of my vision would rest the hands of one doctor, Dr. Bobby Ang, so he had to be good.
My first appointment was all about testing, testing and more testing. I knew we were being cautious and using all these high tech machines so that put me at ease.
On the day of my surgery I was a bit nervous. Dr. Bobby assured me that it’s very simple and painless. Which it definitely was. It was awkward more than anything because while your eyes are numb during the surgery, you can still see everything. But as Doc Bobby said, painless and fast. The operation itself took probably just a couple minutes. Some waiting around and preparation unloved so all in all about 1 hour. If I wasn’t so talkative probably only 20 minutes.
Fast forward to now. I can see perfectly fine. Absolutely no problems. There was a short period of adjustment but as soon as I got home that day I could read a lot better. Today, I have no use for glasses, I can read all my cue cards while hosting without squinting. It’s been such a great experience and I’m so glad I had the operation.
If you’re thinking about having Lasik then talk to the people at Asian Eye Institute. They are definitely highly recommended by me at least. Shot on @sonyphinc #A7sii

It’s become second nature to wake up in the morning and reach over for my glasses, make sure I have my lens case and solution by my bedside, buy new lenses and solution on a regular basis, carry eye drops in my purse, and squint to SEE when I didn’t have either…It was SO deeply ingrained in my everyday routine, like brushing my teeth and combing my hair, that for a long time I didn’t feel the need to fix my eye sight. I only started entertaining the idea 2 years ago when I had Luca. It was impractical and extremely annoying as a new mother, to wake up several times in the middle of the night and wear my glasses which would repeatedly fall off my face, or to put on contacts early in the morning which would make my eyes very dry. I thought it was about time I finally did something about it. I looked back at all the times I struggled with them…That day I joined a swimming competition and lost a lens mid relay, or the time I went scubadiving and had an allergic reaction because of my contacts, or the numerous times I accidentally went to sleep and woke up the next morning having to fish them out somehow from the top of my eyelid.🙄 And just traveling, in general, was always a hassle. I thought, WHY deal with this any longer? I’ve become so accustomed to it. Imagine waking up in a world where I can see in 20/20 without having to wear anything on my eyes!? What a dream. Well that dream finally became reality🙏🏻 After many months of delaying it, I finally mustered up the courage to do Lasik. I was so afraid that it would be painful, that there’d be a long recovery, and what if they accidentally damage my eyes forever?? I did thorough research and sat down with the team at Asian Eye Institute and they were able to answer all my questions and gave me the reassurance I needed. It is one of the BEST things I’ve ever done for myself. My only regret was to not have done it sooner! For anyone who feels the same way and are curious to learn more about lasik and my experience at Asian Eye please DM me, and I will be happy to share it with you! 😊

    LASIK

Today marks FOUR years since my LASIK surgery. I still remember the months, days, hours and minutes before the procedure. Years of research later, I found myself lying on the operating chair, nervous, anxious, excited. It was my first major surgery. Ever. And we were going straight to the eyes.

I woke up the following morning—both eyes still bruised—and I could already see the world in a different light. I could see the hands of the clock move; I could see the leaves and the branches of the tree move charmingly with the breeze of the wind; and I could see the soft, cotton candy-like white clouds separate from the clear blue sky. The images were sharp, the colours were crisp. No camera will ever come close to how beautifully my eyes captured the world around me.

The feeling was so surreal. I was left teary-eyed.

I’d like to thank my incredible surgeon, Doc Emerson Cruz, for his amazing healing hands.

If you are thinking about getting LASIK done but are afraid of the procedure, please reach out. It was one of the best decisions of my life and I hope that it will be yours too. YOU deserve to see the world the way God intended you to—with your own precious pair of eyes!

    LASIK

Thank you Dr. Emerson Cruz of Asian Eye Institute  for the good vibes yesterday! It seriously helped keep me calm.

I went in for LASIK eye surgery yesterday and today I woke up with 20/20 vision for the first time since I was in 4th grade.

I highly recommend him especially when you are scared to undergo LASIK. It will take 15 minutes only.

    LASIK
It’s now been almost three months since I had my Refractive LASIK surgery and till now, I can hardly believe that I have said goodbye to glasses and contacts and that my eyesight has actually gone back to 20-20, as certified by my last eye check up at the Asian Eye Institute.I’ve been excited to share about my LASIK experience, and never hesitate to talk about it with family and friends who I know would benefit from knowing about the benefits of LASIK and that really, there is nothing to be afraid of. Thus the title of this post. I felt like there was a need to “demystify” the whole LASIK procedure, that there are many people like me who didn’t even consider doing LASIK because of unverified facts and information. After experiencing the benefits, I not only want to share my story with others but I NEED to. I think it’s worth learning about this technology because it can really alter your life as it did mine, and what more for those with debilitating eye grade!I wrote about the initial steps I went through prior to my surgery here. Asian Eye brought me, and each LASIK candidate, through an extensive screening process to make sure they have all the vital information about you, your eyes, along with your expectations. Then comes the BIG day, surgery day…For the big surgery day, I was advised to come early for the set appointment with my physician, Dr. Robert Ang. I was not allowed to put on any make up, no perfume or cologne is allowed either. This is because perfumes and scents may emit fumes that could interfere with the lasers that will be used on my eyes. I was also advised to make sure to arrange for a ride home because I would not be able to drive after surgery, and also not to even schedule any activities afterwards because I would need to rest my eyes as much as possible. When I reached Asian Eye, I was asked to wear a blue surgical gown on top of my clothes. I was also asked to put on shoe covers since the surgery area is sanitized, and also don a shower cap. I was assigned a locker for all my other personal items. Then once I was ready, I was ushered into a waiting area which was full of LaZboy couches.I took the opportunity to take one last picture with my glasses on. While waiting, patients who were scheduled before me would come out of the room, and observing that they looked very well, walking out cool, calml and collected, I was more excited than nervous for my own turn.

Finally, I was called inside and there I saw the LASIK machine. They covered one eye, leaving the other eye exposed, as this was the eye Dr. Ang would start on. In this case, it was my right eye.

One of the doctors obliged me and took a photo before I was asked to lie down into the machine. Before starting, Dr. Ang reiterated what he told me during pre-surgery consultation, that because of my age my “near vision” might not be “super clear” even after surgery. It would be my “far vision” that would be corrected. His being clear and straightforward with me was something I appreciated, and he made sure to explain everything to ensure I understood every step of the way.

My procedure then started and Dr.Ang’s calm and reassuring voice made the whole experience a more relaxed one. He would make sure to say what he was doing at every step and gently giving instructions on where to look, what to expect next (“ok we are shifting to the other eye now…”, “we’re putting eye drops…”) and always giving positive motivation like “that’s very good” and “almost done”. Under the sheet, I was holding on to my rosary, as I prayed for a smooth procedure and guidance and clarity for Dr. Ang and all those helping him with my procedure.

With anesthetic eye drops administered, I barely felt anything at all. At one point, a glass lens was placed on top of my cornea and I could see the lights and laser in front of my eyes, sometimes it was bright, sometimes it was all black with lights streaming in different directions (like disco lights), but all the while, I did not feel anything, I felt like I was just watching everything as it happened.

    Lasik demystified, Asian Eye

On the screen, you’ll see Dr. Ang’s view of my eye- as he repaired my lens with his deliberate and decisive actions. At one point I saw him lift the lens of my eye and then put it back, then lasered again. All this while, I was watching with amazement and thinking how amazing medical technology truly is!

    Lasik demystified, Asian Eye

Around 10 minutes went by and it was done. I stood up with one of the doctors guiding me. I could see through the protective goggles but vision was stil blurry. Still, I had my photo taken with Dr. Ang in the O.R. Thank you Doctor!

Medication for home are given along with last instructions:

    – You cannot shampoo your hair, or put shower on your head for the next few days.
    – No eye make up allowed either.
    – You will be advised not to do heavy physical activities nor go swimming for the next month or so, or until the doctor clears you.
    – Avoid driving vehicles especially at night for the first days or until doctor clears you.
    – Wear your goggles ALL THE TIME for the first week. Even if indoors, you must be careful about NOT touching your eyes, rubbing it, or getting dust or small particles inside your eye at this very delicate stage.

    – You will be given 3 different eye drops. Be religious in putting these eye drops that are prescribed.

One is an anti-bacterial, one is anti-inflammatory, and one is a lubricant. Dry eyes and seeing streaming lines when exposed to bright lights are all normal for the coming weeks.

My post LASIK experience went smoothly! I was able to text on my phone right after, and still didn’t feel any pain even after the anesthesia wore off. I made sure to keep my eyes closed and sleep as soon as I got home so that my eyes would be fully rested and recover better.

Like most anything else, experiences do differ. Although generally, LASIK patients go through the procedure very quickly and painlessly the way I did, there are some who tell me they had a different experience, but always the commonality is that the procedure is quick and smooth, generally painless, or if there was any pain, it was definitely bearable, some experience more tearing afterwards, most comment about the dryness and the need to always lubricate. But over all, everyone agrees everything is WORTH IT, and that day after, when you wake up and see a bright CLEAR morning, you see the face of your husband and/or kids with super clear vision. is the day you will rejoice and remember forever. Somehow, after this day, I don’t think I’ll ever take my eyesight for granted. To see clearly is a blessing and a gift!

Dr. Ang will ask to see you the day after surgery for a check up, and then once a month till the third month. On my first month chcek up, I saw my mompreneur friend, Joy, who was there to get screened for LASIK. Was so excited for her!

By the way, that first check up revealed thaht my eye grade was 20-15! They say that is even better than 20-20. Wow. On my next check up, my grade had normalized at 20-20- that is perfect vision!

    PRK

    Let’s start at the end…

Imagine this: Now, 4 months after my operation, I can open my eyes in the morning, and the world is instantly clear. I don’t have to blindly feel around for my glasses by my bedside table.

Or what about this? I come home after a long and tiring day, and all I want to do is fall asleep as quickly as possible — and taking out my contact lenses is now one less thing I need to do before bed.

Oh and during my travels, guess what I no longer need to worry about packing (or in my case, forgetting)?Aaaaall of these paraphernalia: my contact lens case, solution, cleaner, my glasses, my glasses’ case, and a few extra pairs of contact lenses just in case it falls out somewhere. Nope. Not worrying about those anymore. I have permanently deleted those out of my packing spreadsheet.

I also no longer need to worry about my contact lenses or glasses whenever I go to the beach! I can swim, I can surf, I can play beach volleyball — all without worrying about getting sand or salt water in my lenses.

And on a much more practical note: I no longer need to spend over Php 12,000+ on quality contact lenses each year (and we all know it’s starting to get even more expensive over time).

These are just some of the many benefits I continue to reap now that I’ve finally went and did the surgery. Seriously — I wish I had done it sooner. Now, if you’re ready, here’s the beginning of a very long and jam-packed post…

A QUICK RUNDOWN OF THE BASIC INFO
(for all you text-skimmers out there)

    • My doctor/hospital: Dr. Emerson Cruz of Asian Eye Institute
      • (I highly, highly, highly recommend Dr. Cruz! He didn’t just make it a super smooth and safe experience; he actually made it a FUN one. Which I never thought would be a word I would use to describe an experience where my eye got poked and prodded at on an operating table, but I promise you, Dr. Cruz is THE BEST.)
    • Cost of initial refractive/Lasik screening & consultation: Php P3200, and that already includes the consultation fee of the doctor. I think the range depends on whether the doctor you choose is a consultant doctor (like Dr. Cruz) or the director of the Lasik service (Dr. Ang).
    • Cost of surgery at Asian Eye Institute: Php 86,000 – 120,000 total for both eyes
      • The cost largely depends on the type of surgery required for your specific eye health/situation, so it’s best to go in for a screening/consult first.
    • Installment plans:
      • During the time that I got the surgery, Asian Eye Institute was offering a 0% 6-month BDO installment payment plan.
      • #adultingtip: I know that the surgery is a pretty huge investment, so I think it’s a very wise move to call in advance to ask what payment plans or Lasik promos they currently offer.
    • Lifetime warranty: YES, IT’S TRUE!
      • You will be given a lifetime warranty by the Asian Eye Institute — but the great thing is, my friends who have had theirs done years ago, have never had to claim it. Yay! But yes, you can definitely go back for enhancements, and that definitely gives me peace of mind.
    • Timeline for my PRK surgery (from consultation to recovery): Around 8 weeks
      • Please note, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a different type of surgery from LASIK. Because of my eye health (my grade was -5.50 for both eyes), PRK was what was prescribed to me — and this specific surgery has a longer recovery time. Recovery from LASIK is said to be much, much quicker!

A bird’s eye view of the timeline (from screening/consultation to 20/20 vision):

      • FEBRUARY 5: Consultation + screening: 3-4 hours
      • FEBRUARY 5: Release of results: Immediately after my screening, they already shared my results with me, and prescribed me with the kind of surgery that was best for my eyes.
      • FEBRUARY 5: Choosing my surgery date: I was also able to choose a date/schedule for my surgery right after they gave me my results/the go-signal.  The surgery date I chose was pretty immediate: they had an open schedule the following week, so I took it! (If you choose to reserve a schedule on this day, this is also the step where you pay the fee, so it’s best to come prepared!)
      • FEBRUARY 13: The surgery: The surgery itself only takes 10-15 minutes, but overall, on the day of the procedure, I was there for about 2 hours. This covered the waiting time, pre-surgery preparations, and then my post-surgery session where they explained all my eye drops and medication to me.
      • Recovery time for PRK: In general, I was able to resume normal activities after 6 days. There was VERY noticeable vision fluctuation (blurriness towards the end of day) and extreme dryness during the first 2 weeks post-surgery as my cornea continued to heal, but my vision was almost at 20/20 after only 2 and a half weeks.
      • 20/20 vision: My vision continued to improve over time, and I really felt the crystal clear, super sharp vision kick in after 4-5 weeks.

So those are all the most important information you need to know about my surgery.

If you want more details, read on – because this will be a MONSTER post, where I will be as thorough as possible. So grab a drink, maybe some snacks; and get ready to scroll.

Before we dive in, here’s an overview of what I will be sharing in the rest of this post. I know it’s long, but I promise to make it worth your while — by the end of this post, I really think that you’ll feel better equipped to make the decision whether to go for it or not! (Spoiler alert: YOU SHOULD)

Overview of My PRK Surgery Experience

    • Why I decided to get Lasik
    • How to know if you’re qualified to get Lasik
    • What to expect during the screening and consultation
    • PRK vs. LASIK
    • How to prepare for the surgery
    • What to expect during the surgery
    • What to expect after PRK surgery, aka. a play-by-play rundown of my recovery experience
    • Is it really worth the investment?

Why I decided to get Lasik (which turned into PRK)

There were several reasons, and it was the combination of all of them that finally pushed me to do it:

    1. I recently had 3 friends who got the surgery, and they could NOT stop raving about how it changed their life.
      • I’ve always had Lasik at the back of my head for almost 10 years now. I’ve been wearing my contact lenses for almost 20 years, and I would always tell myself, okay, this is the year I finally get Lasik!
      • But then I’d get scared because I don’t know anyone who’s done it!
      • And then thankfully, my friends started getting the eye surgery done — finally, I now have people I know and trust who can give me their firsthand experience! I asked them a lot of questions: did it hurt? How much is it? What hospital do you recommend?
      • The consensus was: It’s safe. It’s worth it. It’s life-changing. Hearing that from people I trusted was the push I needed.
    2. Contact lenses are bad for your eyes in the long-run
      • I got a major blindness scare back when I was 20 (contact lens related infection): and my eye doctor back then told me that I needed to lay off wearing contact lenses because I’ve already been wearing it for over a decade, I would always wear it for long periods of time during the day, and it’s just not good for the eyes long term.
      • That’s when he explained to me that actually, the cornea does not have any blood vessels. Which means, it gets its oxygen from the air. And so when you slap a contact lens over your eye, then it largely blocks your cornea from getting the oxygen it needs — especially cheaper lenses, which often have very poor gas permeability. It can really cause long-term eye damage, injuries, or infections.
    3. I live an active lifestyle (and I plan to do so for decades to come!)
      • You’d think that all those reasons above would just convince me to stop wearing contacts, right? But noooooo. #shepersisted
      • I live quite an active lifestyle: I love practicing yoga, doing high intensity workouts at the gym, and would often be at the beach. It’s a lifestyle I really enjoy, but it’s also a life that’s kinda challenging to enjoy when you have to wear glasses. (In fact, I broke a pair of glasses while doing inversions in yoga.)
    4. Work/vanity
      • My work requires me to do a lot of public events, as well as be on camera a lot. And because my glasses are very, very thick (-5.50 for both eyes), and I don’t know… I just feel more confident without them!

How do I know if I’m qualified for Lasik?

Not everyone can just go in and immediately get Lasik done. I was actually pretty scared that I wasn’t going to qualify, since, as I shared earlier, my previous doctor already told me that I had some scarring in my eyes due to sleeping with my contact lenses on.

First of all, you need to be over 18 years old. But more importantly, you have to undergo a battery of tests to figure out if you’re actually a good candidate for the surgery. This is where they check for your overall eye health, the thickness of your cornea, the dryness level of your eyes, among other things.

What to expect during the screening and consultation

    • Important! You need to stop wearing contact lenses for 2-4 weeks before you go in for your screening/consultation.
      • This ensures that they get the most accurate results. Thankfully, I didn’t have any events or talks during that period, and I was mostly just in the office. (I did, however, had to workout with glasses on.)
    • Choose a reputable hospital for your screening.
      • While doing my research, one of the things I read was that some commercial optical centers were mainly, well… commercial — and so they aren’t very strict when it comes to their screening/consultation process. The more patients, the better, right?
      • And so I really asked a LOT of people for their recommendations and experiences with different hospitals. At the end of the day, the resounding recommendation was Asian Eye Institute in Manila, Philippines. They have several branches, but I went to their main office in Rockwell, Makati.
    • Call to schedule your appointment in advance.
    • How much is the consultation/screening? At Asian Eye Institute, the initial consultation for Lasik surgery costs Php 1,500.
    • Prepare to take half a day off work. You will go through A LOT of tests. This can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours, so don’t expect to be in and out in an hour. Bring snacks and earphones (there will be lots of waiting time in between tests as well).
    • Bring a jacket. Machines used for they eyes/eye surgery need to be kept at a very cool temperature; that’s why these eye centers tend to be FREEZING COLD. I know it’s not related to the surgery, but still a very helpful tip all the same!
    • Is the screening/consultation painless? Yes, don’t worry, it won’t hurt! The only slightly uncomfortable test was when they tested for my eyes’ moisture level. There was discomfort, but not pain.

    PRK vs. Lasik

Now, my doctor can totally explain this WAY better, but here’s what I understood (and how I feel about it):

    • PRK and LASIK lead to the same destination, same results — but what sets them apart is the methodology used, and the recovery time.
    • Recovery period: With your destination being 20/20 vision — LASIK recovery is like taking a plane, PRK is like taking a car.
    • LASIK involves cutting a flap in your cornea; PRK doesn’t. Instead, the outer layer of the patient’s cornea is removed, exposing an area for the laser to treat.

As I mentioned earlier, after running me through a long battery of tests, Dr. Cruz determined that even if my cornea was thick enough, and that my eyes weren’t too dry — he still thought it best to perform PRK surgery on me because my eye grade is pretty high (-5.50 for both eyes).

    PRE-SURGERY:
What do I need to do to prepare for my Lasik or PRK surgery?

They’ll give you a whole briefer document that you can take home, but basically, these are the 3 big things you need to remember:

    • Don’t wear your contact lenses for 2-4 weeks prior to your surgery.
    • Do not wear any eye makeup or any eye creams or perfume the day of your surgery.
    • Arrange for a ride home. Get a friend or family member to pick you up after the surgery, as your vision will still be blurry and I mean… you just had very delicate surgery done ON YOUR EYES. Just like any surgery, you will need time to recover!

DURING THE PROCEDURE: Does it hurt?!

I was on the operating table for only 15 minutes — and it felt like even less! After both my eyes were done, I was like, “THAT’S IT?! I have to stand up now?! I was just getting comfortable!”

    • Is the procedure painful? This was my main worry before going in. (My initial imaginings of eye surgery was that the doctor will be coming in with a knife to my eyeball. And blood. Lots of blood.)  So yes, I was worried that it was going to really, really, really hurt. But there was no pain (or blood!) whatsoever. They will put anaesthetic drops on your eyes.
    • What sensations will you feel? (Just as a heads up)
      • The biggest thing I felt was a topical pressure – understandably, because something was touching my eye – but again, NO PAIN. I was very (happily) surprised.
      • They’ll have a contraption to keep your eyes open, so don’t worry about blinking all of a sudden(haha) – you won’t be able to.
      • They will pour water on your eyeball several times, which is kind of a funny/weird sensation to be honest, because it feels like the doctor is giving your eyes a bath. No pain, it just felt funny!
      • You need to keep your eyes trained on a point of light. This was hard at the beginning, but I got used to it pretty quickly.
    • What if my eyes or my head move involuntarily during the Lasik surgery?
      • Yeah, I worried about that, too. What if I lost sight of the red light, or if my eyes roll too far back? But it was explained to me by my doctor that the machines they use in Asian Eye Institute are very smart and top of the line. They have this “eye tracker” kind of feature that scans your eye, automatically monitors its position, and is able to adjust the laser to compensate for any involuntary micro-movements your eyes might make during surgery.
    • The most disturbing thing I smelled…
      • (Yep, smelled, not felt) … was a slight burning smell. Not gonna lie, I panicked* just a little bit when this scent wafted in the air, but it passed in a jiffy — and again, there wasn’t any pain. DON’T WORRY — your corneas are not burning! (It’s just the smell of carbon atoms being released into the air as the laser breaks down your collagen molecules.)
    • You know what helped keep me calm?
      • The entire time, Dr. Emerson Cruz was talking me through it. He would let me know what was happening, which I really appreciated, and at the same time, he would ask me questions and even crack jokes that would make me laugh and forget that there was a medical contraption right on my eyeball.
      • (Until now, I still can’t believe that I was able to have a FUN time during a medical surgery on my eyeballs. Haha)

And so… if anything else, my #1 tip for you is to find a doctor who is not just experienced, and really good at what s/he does —
but someone who you jive with, and has a light personality (vs. a serious and somber one!). It really helped me feel way less anxious.

    AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
How long is the recovery time after the surgery?

Again, my surgery was PRK (not Lasik), and this type of surgery has a longer recovery time than your usual LASIK. Many LASIK patients are said to experience improved vision immediately following the surgery, and are able to go back to work 1-2 days after.

Wish it were the same for me, but alas! I needed the PRK. But no regrets, just 20/20 vision  Okay, here goes my diary of my recovery period:

    • Day 1-2, post surgery:
      • I spent 3 days in bed: I had my curtains drawn, I was wearing shades, and was EXTREMELY light sensitive.
      • I also experienced major itching in my eyes, but unfortunately! I couldn’t scratch – or even squeeze them! It was excruciating not being able to do anything to relieve the extreme itchiness, but I was prescribed a bunch of eye drops, so those really helped.
      • Looking at screens was pretty uncomfortable, my eyes would start to water after 3 minutes of looking at my phone. So I mostly just laid in bed, listened to podcasts and audiobooks.
    • Day 3, post surgery:
      • My vision was mega blurry, and my eyes got so dry, so quickly. I had to use my eye drops every 15 minutes. Still super light sensitive, can’t even read a book. Thus, more naps.
    • Day 4-5, post surgery:
      • Vision still not back to normal. The best description I have for the sensation I was feeling: it was like having sand all over your eyes… but you can’t do anything to rub it out! So frustrating. Again, this itchiness is something you only experience if you undergo PRK. Lucky Lasik ducks.
    • Day 7, post-surgery:
      • I went back to my doctor to remove the “bandage” lens over my eyes (which is basically a grade-less contact lens to protect my cornea as it healed).
      • Hoooooly moly. This was a HALLELUJAH moment! All of a sudden, the sandy feeling was gone: No more itching! My eyes felt like they could finally breathe. I was so incredibly happy.
      • Update on my healing at this point: My right eye was 95% healed, my left eye was 85% healed.
    • Day 14, post-surgery:
      • My eyes are still healing, but I don’t feel the need to wear sunglasses all the time anymore.
      • But my vision was still fluctuating at this point — it would go from super clear in the morning, to blurry in the afternoon (this is because the corneal cells were still healing themselves) — and I still experienced difficulty looking at my laptop screen for long periods of time.
      • Again, this is just part of the more gradual recovery time from PRK. I totally expected it, and I was absolutely loving the feeling of seeing very, very clearly the moment I opened my eyes in the morning.
    • Day 15, post-surgery:
      • I felt safe enough to go back to working out (yoga and circuit training). I just took extra care to not get sweat in my eyes.
      • I also felt safe enough to apply eye makeup for a work event.
    • 5 weeks, post-surgery:
      • We were driving through Puerto Rico one weekend, on our way to the beach, and I casually read off a small street sign from very far away. It took about five seconds for it to register in my head – and I was like, OH MY GOD. My vision is perfect.
      • What then ensued was a Road Sign Read-Off between me and my boyfriend. Spoiler alert: I won. BOOYAH.

But seriously: it was an emotional moment. I have had bad eyesight for over two decades, and I never, ever thought that it would be possible to get my 20/20 vision back again. It felt like a life miracle.

Which brings me to my final point…

Is Lasik or PRK surgery really worth it?

100% YES. In fact, my only regret is that I did not do it sooner. I could have enjoyed the benefits of 20/20 vision earlier.

I know it’s an expensive investment… but it’s a lifelong one. You’re investing to improve one of your five major senses. An organ that you use every single day. The very tool that helps you experience the world in a richer way.

And if you’re a creative like me — and you’re into photography, videography, art, design — your eyes are your creative workhorses. It’s one of the most important tools in my toolbox.

Just a tip: There are some things in life that you can scrimp on… but NOT THIS!

Make sure you go to a very reputable doctor for this very delicate procedure. You don’t want to choose a place just because it’s the cheapest — these are your EYES you’re risking here!

I decided to get my surgery at Asian Eye Institute after many convos with friends and readers, and I’m so glad I did.

I really felt like every person who I came in contact with in that hospital knew exactly what they were doing, I was given thorough information every step of the way, everything felt top of the line, and it helped relieve any anxiety I was feeling. Most of all, it felt like a legit hospital with legit doctors, and not very flashy, gimmicky, commercial, let’s-Groupon-this-deal kinda service. (Haha!)

And that’s it! Now, 4 months after getting the surgery, I could barely remember my life pre-PRK surgery.

My boyfriend still teases me sometimes, slyly commenting before I go to bed – “Hey, don’t forget to take out your contacts!”

And of course, as a reflex built over 18 years, I would reach for my eyes, making a motion to take out my contact lenses… until he starts laughing.

If you’ve read through my entire account/diary and you made it all the way here – congratulations! You must be a relative. Just kidding. If you’ve made it all the way to here: then you must be REALLY considering it. And if you need more reassurance, here are the only three things I have to leave you with:

    It’s painless.
    It’s life-changing.
    It’s worth the investment.

If you’re in the Philippines, I highly recommend booking a consult with Dr. Emerson Cruz of Asian Eye Institute(as I cannot speak about the experience with other centers or reliability of other doctors; I can only speak about mine!).

    Implantable Contact Lenses

    UNBELIEVABLY, 20/20

I never thought that I could say this again but I can finally see clearly through my own eyes. I’m still getting used to it but I’m back to 20/20 vision, and I couldn’t be more grateful and thankful for all the love and support of the people who made a little girl’s dream come to life.

I used to struggle with thick glasses and contact lenses but now I have no hassle of these “external aids” anymore. God has truly blessed me with an opportunity in disguise and it’s truly in his own perfect timing that I was able to witness my most life-changing experience ever.

Last Friday, I went through my first ever surgery at Asian Eye Institute. As shared with you all before, I failed the Lasik screening because of my high myopia and astigmatism. Although, luckily, I was still able to pass a test called Phakic IOL Implantation or Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL).

Having this surgery done has been by far one of the most important treasures in my life and I’d love to share with you all this amazing journey of mine.

If you ask me, I’ve never felt so ALIVE cause an ultimate dream of mine has come true in what I believe was God’s perfect timing.

    Road to ICL

Just a quick recap… I went through a four hour screening at AEI (Asian Eye Institute) 3 weeks ago to check if whether or not I was a candidate for Lasik. Sadly, I didn’t pass the test but it turned out to be a great blessing in disguise cause I found out that my retina was very weak and close to detaching. Mind you, having a detached retina could cause loss of vision. So to strengthen it, I had a retina laser procedure done which happened for around 10 minutes.

During this same time period, I was introduced to Dr. Ang who talked to me and my parents about ICL. Not to get our hopes up, his expertise definitely assured me of one of the biggest decisions I had to make. To be honest, deciding to go through the surgery was really tough for me because of the external factors that came with it like the feeling of anxiety,  the overall price of having it done and the healing period since I was bound for a trip soon.

I honestly couldn’t help but cry because I felt guilty especially cause of how much it would cost to make this come true. I was just lucky that I have the best parents in the world who convinced me and supported me all the way. They both never stopped telling me how this opportunity was right in front of me and how this would benefit me for a lifetime. To have less eye complications than what I already endured and to actually see the world clearly to would be benefits that I could never replace. So there and then I did it, I took the risk and decided to go for surgery because I knew it would be an investment of a lifetime.

    What is ICL?

I honestly don’t want to go into too much detail about this procedure since I took photos of the brochure which if interested, you can read to help you learn more.

    Front Cover

    Brochure Information

    Back Cover

But basically to keep it short and simple, only one company in the world called STAAR Surgical creates these special implantable lenses. These lenses are ordered from abroad and shipped to AEI. These lenses are injected in seconds in both eyes then it takes place  between the iris and the eye lens.  Just like me, you might wonder… what will happen if vision changes and complications happen once I’m older?  If vision changes significantly or if cataracts are developed, lenses could be removed or replaced because it does not alter the structures of the eye or cornea. This actually is the cool feature of this procedure cause unlike lasik which is permanent, it’s reversible.

    Prepping for ICL Surgery

So before the actual surgery, I was told to get an FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar) and ECG (Electrocardiogram) just to make sure that I’ll be okay on the day of surgery and to guide the anesthesiologist. I did these tests in St. Lukes, two days before and it was really fast. The results just took a while.

Also since this was my first ever surgery, I asked for God’s protection and guidance during mass and confession.

    Pre-ICL Surgery

My surgery was scheduled at 8:30am but I had to be at AEI around 6:30am for all the needed preparations which I already knew would take long (since we were informed the day before). I honestly didn’t have any emotions yet.

The first thing they told me to do when I arrived was to change into scrubs and to sit in a lazy boy chair. A nurse assisted me since they had to take my glasses off. Two different eyedrops were constantly placed in my eye- one for dilation and the other one was anesthesia. While this was happening, I was interviewed for past medical history then an IVY was also placed in my hand. I honestly didn’t really like the feeling of the IVY cause it was painful and it was at this moment that I got really anxious for the surgery. It was already in my mind that it was bound to happen.
The next step after the IVY was eye marking to guide the doctor during operation. It took only 5 minutes, then they made me rest back in the lazy boy chair to wait for my turn for surgery. While this was happening, an old man was in the room who also talked to me. We talked about our surgeries and we wished each other luck. For me, I took this moment as God reassuring me that everything will be okay after the surgery. I felt comfort then.

I waited for around an hour for my turn and I honestly couldn’t see anything. It was all such a blur. I couldn’t even see the face of the nurse or doctors who assisted me. I honestly didn’t know what to expect.

    ICL Surgery

When it was my turn, I was told to lie down in a hospital bed and I was wheeled down to the operating room. This was the moment when I felt really scared. When I was in the room, I remember the BP and heart rate monitors being attached to me. A bright light was above me and there were nurses who immediately cleaned my eyes with betadine. I could hear my pulse increasing cause I knew it was finally the moment of the surgery. I was then lightly sedated and the surgery started.

I honestly don’t know how long the procedure took but all I remember was Dr. Ang saying “look straight.: All I remember seeing was lava texture inside a kaleidoscope. There were a lot of gooey colors. Honestly, I didn’t feel any pain at all. Before I even knew it, it was over and I was wheeled out of the room.

    Post ICL Surgery

It was really weird cause I could visually see how sharper my surroundings were. My eyes were dilated though so it wasn’t a 100% clear but it was better than the usual cause I could finally see the face of the nurses and doctors who assisted me. I relaxed in a lazy boy chair again for 2 hours since they had to observe me. It felt weird and my eyes felt really stingy. I couldn’t help but be in awe cause despite the dilation causing the blurring effect, my vision was sharper and different. For me, it was just unbelievable.

    The Eyedrops
So I was finally discharged from AEI around 12 noon. It felt so weird cause it was my first time to be wheeled down through a wheelchair. I was given four eyedrops to be done 4 times in a day and also protective goggles to be worn for 3 days since I wasn’t allowed to wet my eyes for precautionary measures.

    The Protective Goggles
On the way home, everything was visually sharp and clearer. I couldn’t help but tell my parents over and over again about it and I endlessly thanked them for blessing me with the best gift I could ever ask for in this lifetime.

Right now as I’m writing this story, I am on my fourth day out of surgery so I’m not using the protective goggles anymore. I’m slowly seeing the full effect of the operation and I am overwhelmed and filled with so much joy of what I’m seeing. Never did I imagine to feel like this nor to see the world in this way again. I am beyond grateful.

I would really like to thank Dr. Ang and his team for a painless and comfortable procedure in Asian Eye Institute. I would most definitely would like to thank my family especially my parents and lola who shared their love and support since the day I made the decision. Thanks also to all my supportive friends.

As my parents mentioned to me, God gave me a second chance to see the beauty of the world in high definition. I will truly not take this gift for granted.

So you might wonder, what’s the deeper meaning to this story I just shared? Nothing really…I’m just really happy and I couldn’t stop myself from sharing this special moment with you all.

The biggest takeaway I guess I’d like you to take from this story is to believe that things fall into place in God’s perfect time. During the time you least expect it, you’ll be surprised on the blessings you’ll receive and the second chance you’re given. Don’t be afraid. Stay positive. Be grateful and as much as possible, share these blessings with other people.

Right now with my “new eyes,” I’m excited to experience the world and share its beauty and stories with you all. I’ve actually been in continuous follow up check ups with Dr. Ang and so far so good. My vision might have fluctuations from 20/20 to 20/25 but it’s still a beautiful gift that I’m forever grateful to receive from up above. And oh, one interesting fact that I learned from the doctors office the other day is that crying helps improve vision cause it has certain elements that make your eyes healthier. Not to say we should do this but crying isn’t all that bad after all.

    Malot Morales

    Finding a good LASIK surgeon

My husband is one of those people who needed to wear eyeglasses from an early age, but refused to do so. Unfortunately, his eyesight had gotten worse over the years and eventually, without eyeglasses, he would only see silhouettes of people and objects. This made me worry a lot about him, especially that he’s miles away from us. I would fear him accidentally breaking or dropping his eyeglasses and I would simply not be there to be his guide. To help him cope in case such incident would take place, he actually kept three pairs of glasses.

With the technological advancements in the field of medicine, however, and after hearing countless stories of improved vision through LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery, we decided that he too would go through the same procedure to improve his eyesight. And so, our search for the right doctor began months before he came home last December, although I could not say that it had been an easy task.

    Where we started

My mother-in-law recommended her own ophthalmologist, who practices at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and St. Luke’s Medical City, and is a graduate of Harvard School of Medicine. With her glowing recommendations and the doctor’s impressive educational background and years of experience (I looked him up online), I contacted his clinic at once to schedule an appointment. Unfortunately, I was told that he won’t be available in December. Apparently, he goes to the US and spends Christmas there every year.

A friend from the church also recommended a young ophthalmologist who performed LASIK surgery both on her and her husband a few years back. However, every time I would try to set an appointment with him, I would be told a different clinic address for the surgery. Somehow, from Asian Hospital, the machine got transferred to a small clinic at Alabang Town Center, then to another clinic at the Mall of Asia. I didn’t think that was a good sign, although I believed in my heart that he was a good doctor too, especially judging by one of his patient’s recommendation and condition now.

And then I met another doctor who was a neurologist-ophthalmologist and practices the profession both at Makati Medical Center and Asian Hospital. I was easily at ease with her, especially that she offered information that I never even thought of asking. Impressed, not to mention the fact that we’re not getting positive signs from the other two doctors, my husband and I considered her. She was also recommended by a couple of friends from the church, but I later on found out that they were her patients for other cases and not for LASIK. That being said, although I wanted her to be the one, especially that she’s a churchmate too, and be done with the search, I had a nagging feeling that we had to look for another one.

    The real dilemma

Two to three weeks before my husband’s arrival from Singapore, I started finalizing his schedule. It turned out that his relatives, particularly his mom and sister, were also getting anxious about it. They kept telling me to check on this particular doctor or so, do some thorough background research on the ones I’ve already shortlisted, etc. until I started having this nagging feeling that there might actually be someone out there more competent to perform the surgery, too.

I began looking up articles on how to choose the right physician to do LASIK surgery on you, things one should know both before and after LASIK surgery, including checking out online the profiles of the ophthalmologists listed in the online directories of eye clinics, including certain hospitals. I actually called up the medical institutions to get more information about some of these physicians, particularly on how often they perform LASIK surgery in a week or month, and I asked for referrals from the hospital staff, too. I even talked to some of the doctors themselves. I finally came up with a new list.

    Digging through the pile

It’s amazing how much I discovered when I started researching! I learned that not all ophthalmologists can, will, or should perform LASIK surgery. From the articles I’ve read online, I realized that in other countries, particularly the US, one must have a license in LASIK surgery. Here, in the Philippines, however, the regulations do not appear to be that strict when it comes to LASIK surgery. Doctors who practice general ophthalmology may perform LASIK surgery, but those who specialize in cornea and refractive surgery are the ones who are most likely to be experienced in performing LASIK surgery.

Moreover, even ophthalmologists who seem to have very impressive titles do not necessarily mean they would perform LASIK surgery. While some have the integrity to admit that they are not well-trained to do LASIK surgery, there may be some who would claim that they can do the job despite probably just having assisted in one or two cases. For instance, there’s this doctor who agreed to do it, but when I called one of the hospitals she was supposedly affiliated with, her name was not even mentioned among those who perform LASIK surgery at that hospital.

Wondering if the staff I was talking to might be playing favorites or just forgot to mention her, I decided to call the same hospital several times, talked to three different personnel, asked the same question(s), and even dropped this particular doctor’s name. Yet, they all recommended other doctors and told me that she has never performed LASIK surgery at that particular hospital. Come to think of it, this doctor’s online profile doesn’t really say much about her experience at all, but because she was recommended by a friend, I had high hopes that she would be the one.

What I should have (also) done first

So far, I have learned that although recommendations are good, you still must do your research, which shouldn’t be that difficult, since you can now just easily look up a person’s profile online and call the hospital he/she is affiliated with to verify his/her credentials. One should not be easily impressed too by those who have double majors in the field of medicine either, or are simply affiliated with prestigious hospitals. Having the title(s) of a diplomate and/or fellow (at a prestigious medical school) coupled with years of experience in the field is more promising, don’t you think?

Moreover, I have learned that just like not all ophthalmologists are qualified to perform LASIK surgery, not all patients are also qualified to go through LASIK surgery. And that is why it’s imperative that the patient undergoes a thorough screening first, which typically lasts 2.5–4 hours. If you are told that it’s going to take much less than that, then you should start wondering how thorough their screening is. (I have checked with three or four eye centers, including a major hospital, and ironically, only the eye center at one of these hospitals told me that it would only last for 30 minutes to one hour.)

Two days before my husband’s arrival, I was already in panic. I have narrowed down the list to two doctors from a well-known private hospital, but I still wasn’t that sure about either of them. Thankfully, my sister-in-law, who also happens to be a medical doctor, but specializes in emergency medicine, finally stepped in and started ringing her fellow doctors from UP-PGH for referrals.

    Meeting Dr. Right

My sister-in-law gave me three names (with contact info), which I immediately looked up online. One of them really stood out, and the fact that this doctor is affiliated with the Asian Eye Institute somehow gave me comfort. Perhaps it’s because the institution’s name suggests that eye care is their specialization, their doctors are trained solely to help patients with visual impairments, and they must be performing LASIK surgery on a regular basis.

I called the doctor then, and she was very friendly and accommodating. I liked the fact that although she knew I would call, she didn’t automatically assume that it was a done deal. She was gracious enough to tell us that we can just text her if we decide to go with her, and promised to prioritize us, especially that my husband would only be home for three weeks and it was almost Christmas. She also answered my questions, and offered to give us a discount because we were being recommended by a close friend of hers. Her name’s Dr. Maria Luisa Patricia C. Solis, and we were happy with our decision to choose her and their institute.

Four days after speaking with Dr. Solis on the phone, we went to the Asian Eye Institute at Rockwell Center, Makati City for my husband’s pre-surgery checkup. His eyes were thoroughly examined, which lasted for about 2.5 hours. We finally met Dr. Solis in person, and we learned that my husband was not a candidate for LASIK surgery. Certain conditions must be met, and he failed. His eye grade was simply too high and he had astigmatism. That didn’t mean, of course, that there was no more hope for him.

    At the Asian Eye Institute

We were told that technically, a patient with that condition could still get LASIK surgery–some doctors would do that, especially for the money–but that won’t really help the patient in the long run, since LASIK would not address all the problems. My husband was recommended instead to go through PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). It is somewhat similar to LASIK surgery, but instead of creating a flap in the cornea, which is what they do in LASIK, the outer layers of his corneas would be scraped off.

PRK also requires longer healing period and the patient gets to experience more pain than those who undergoes LASIK. However, PRK is more advantageous, particularly to those who have an active lifestyle. Other advantages of PRK over LASIK were thoroughly explained to us by Dr. Solis, as well as exactly what would happen during the surgery, how to care for the eyes after surgery, and other things we should expect.

My husband and I came back to Asian Eye Institute in Makati the following morning for the surgery. We were immediately assisted when we arrived; the schedule was strictly observed. The actual surgery was only supposed to last for about 10 minutes, but I must have waited for nearly an hour because preparations had to be done to him before the surgery and he was made to rest for a few minutes after the surgery too plus, medicines must be administered to him first before he left the clinic.

We spent around PHP76,000++ in all, including the screening fee. That already comes with a 15% discount, by the way, because my husband’s an OFW, plus Dr. Solis had waived her consultation fee during the screening. (The refractive surgery package quoted to us originally amounted to nearly PHP80,000, including the screening fee.)

Asian Eye Institute’s Refractive Surgery Package includes the first batch of medicines the patient needs to take after the surgery,  which was good for 2–3 weeks, contact lens bandage, a pair of goggles to help protect the eyes from dust particles, followup checkups at any Asian Eye Institute branch, and whatever documentation a patient might need, such as medical certificate.

Caring for my patient after the surgery

At home, I didn’t really have problems caring for my husband. I have installed thick dark curtains in our bedroom to keep the sunlight from hurting his eyes. He usually only experienced intense pain in the morning when he wakes up and a few minutes before his scheduled medication (or when the effect of his medicines wear off), which only lasted for a few seconds though. He had to take four different eye drops at five minutes interval every four hours from 8 AM to 8 PM for about three weeks or until supplies ran out, then he’s given new prescription to take.

My husband was also able to watch TV and go out and water the plants (while wearing a polarized Ray-Ban) a day or two after his surgery. I had to help him take a bath though, particularly in shampooing his long hair, doing it salon-style. I got him a pair of swimming goggles to use when he takes a bath to avoid having the water get into his eyes, too, which he only had to use for a week or until after the contact lens bandage were removed from his eyes.

Patient managing on his own now

My husband is back in Singapore now, and he learned that two of his workmates also went through eye surgery during Christmas vacation. However, among the three of them, he was the only one whose eyes seemed to be healing fast and properly. And we believe that it must have something to do with the doctor. His workmates had problems because they didn’t have time to recuperate–something that Dr. Solis stressed to us is a must–they went back to work immediately. There was even a time when they asked my husband to have them use his eye drops because they didn’t bring any and they were experiencing so much pain in the eyes!

It’s amazing what a huge difference it makes when you have a doctor who really takes care of you, tries to manage your expectations well, anticipates the things you might need, and so on. Before my husband went back to Singapore, Dr. Solis, issued a medical certificate stressing that my husband must not work beyond office hours and a prescription that contained three different brands of medicines that he might find in Singapore in case what he’s using here isn’t available, including the name of a reputable eye clinic that he could visit in case he needed to see a doctor there.

Ideally, a PRK patient must go through followup checkups three days after the surgery (to remove the contact lens bandage), one week after the surgery, one month later, then three, six, nine, and twelve months after. Moreover, exposure to computer and TV screens should not be more than two hours a day, lubricant eye drops must be used at least four times a day or as needed, eye glasses that offer high UV protection must be worn when under the sun, smokes and dusty places must be avoided, as well as the beach and swimming pools for a certain period of time.

All is well that ends well

Of course, since my husband needs to go to work, he can’t really meet all those above requirements. For one, he has to work on the computer for more than two hours a day and he couldn’t come home every three months for his followup checkup. Nevertheless, he’s recuperating well. His vision has already greatly improved even when he was still here, and he could very well attain 20/20 vision on both eyes in the weeks to come. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean he would never have to wear a pair of eyeglasses again for the rest of his life.

Undergoing LASIK surgery is no guarantee that one will no longer need to wear a pair of reading glasses, especially when he gets old and gray. At 40, age-related macular degeneration begins, and apparently, no one’s exempted from it (and your good doctor should be able to manage your expectation by also telling you this).

In that case, was spending a lot of money and getting a LASIK surgery worth it? Of course! Nothing compares to seeing the happiness in my husband’s face because he can now see things clearly even without eyeglasses! Just try not to go through the same hassle as I did when looking for the right doctor, okay? You already know where to find one! <3

I started using eyeglasses and contact lens when I was 15 years old. My grade was only 125 and 175 at that time, until it increased to 1000 and 850. At 30, I finally decided to undergo a phakic IOL procedure with Dr. Ang. Why Asian Eye? It was because I trusted the team, I trusted Dr. Ang, and I am confident to say that I was in good hands. The medical facilities are top-of-the-line and very clean. His team is very polite, well-coordinated and knowledgeable.

I am based in Abu Dhabi,U.A.E. and went back to the Philippines just to have my lasik surgery done at Asian Eye Institute.
When I returned to work, my friends were amazed that I was not wearing my eyeglasses anymore. I told them about the wonderful experience I had with AEI under the highly professional hands of Dr. Ang and his team. Actually, one of my friends is now very convinced to undergo the same procedure that I had. He would like to make an appointment for Lasik screening and eventually an appointment with Dr. Ang.

I would like to commend the Institute for the superior facilities and for the highly professional admin staff and medical team which are truly world-class! Everything was capably covered, from the Lasik screening at their satellite clinic in Trinoma, scheduling, surgery and checkups. The efficiency was really very praiseworthy and admirable. Keep it up!

I wrote this email without the aid of eyeglasses, something I was not capable of doing for many years.

AEI is a very impressive medical center equipped with courteous and friendly staff and experienced medical doctors. Facilities are well kept, clean and comfortable. Before my Lasik surgery, in the area where patients are prepared for surgery, I didn’t feel that I was in a hospital. Patients were provided with clean comfortable lounge, sofa chairs with warm and soft blankets. Area was very spacious and clean. I was very impressed. Surgery was very fast but they still provided personal care and check-ups for patients like me, minutes, days, weeks, and months after. I would definitely recommend AEI to family, friends, and colleagues especially if they are seeking for an eye institute that is a cut above the rest.

I had a case of astigmatism and myopia and I foud it very inconvenient to wear prescription glasses and/or contact lenses everyday so I set up an appointment for a consultation through their website. Their customer service was great and all my queries were answered promptly.

I went for my initial check up and I was treated very well. The doctors and attendants were all warm and friendly. Dr. Ang scheduled the Lasik procedure for the next day and I never felt any apprehensions or fear as they made me feel confident that everything will be fine. We are gifted with only a pair of eyes; those precious peepers that allow us to see our surroundings and make daily living a beautiful sight. Some say the eyes are mirrors of the soul, that they express our sincerest emotions and magnify our characters. Even science considers the eyes superior to the other human organs, what with their primary role of giving us the sense of sight.

But while they are powerful, our eyes are also delicate and sensitive. So you can just imagine how frightened I was on the morning of October 7, 2005, as I lay on a surgical bed to take the first operation of my entire life – for my precious eyes.

My case was not as serious as the vision-impairing cataract or glaucoma. The eye disorder I had for the last nine years was refractive; I wore glasses to cope with nearsightedness and the constant headaches caused by astigmatism. While this seemed very simple, my eye disorder had so much affected my job and, well, my entire life.

You see, even with my glasses on, I could not make out in detail what ever it was beyond the range of one and a half feet. I could not entirely appreciate the beauty of coastlines, gigantic trees or mountain ranges. I could not read road signs and markers on jeepneys and buses. I could not recognize the people who wave to me from afar. I wake up to

I always tell my husband that the operation/treatment done on me at AEI has given me back my gift of sight and this is the BEST GIFT I have ever received in my entire life! Others who are in the same situation as I, who are either far- or near-sighted can empathize with me when I say that having blurred vision PLUS having to wear either eyeglasses or contact lenses is such a daily burden. Two of my daughters, age 18 and 20 also have to have their vision corrected and they can’t wait to have their turn at AEI. I would recommend AEI to others simply because aside from its being safe and accurate, the friendliness and comfort the staff and Dr Ang had given me during my visits there were enough to make me feel at ease before, during and after. Wearing reading glasses was very inconvenient for me because I easily lose or misplace them. My reading problem affected my daily activities, especially at work because I can’t start without my reading glasses. I attended an information seminar Asian Eye conducted on a new treatment that guarantees that I won’t be needing reading glasses anymore. This made me decide to undergo LASIK for presbyopia.
Before surgery, I was nervous because there was a lot of screening tests to ensure safety and accuracy of treatment. During surgery, I felt comfortable and I didn’t feel any pain, and after surgery, I was satisfied. I think the surgery didn’t take longer than 10 minutes. Then, they scheduled a checkup to monitor the condition of my eyes. Now, I can use my computer, read, and send text messages without difficulty. I can also start working without the need to look for my reading glasses. For people like me who find it a hassle to use reading glasses, I advise you to visit Asian Eye; it provides solutions to your eye problems and ensures you are protected and safe.

So here’s my morning eye-related ritual. When I wake up, I would reach at our headboard for my eyeglasses. After wearing it, I’ll look at our wall clock to check on the time. Then I would go to our dresser, unscrew the two lids of my contact lens container, then put on my contact lenses. Then there’s also an evening eye-related ritual – unscrew the two lids of my contact lens container, remove my contact lenses, put them in the container, drop some solution, then screw the lids back. Then, I would put on my glasses and lie down, watch TV or read, then when I’m too sleepy, I’ll remove my glasses, put it on our headboard then retire.

When I’m not wearing my glasses or contact lenses, everything is a blur. I’m a -4.50 on both eyes. On some days when I’m too tired, I would fall asleep without removing my contact lenses. Then I would have to battle some mean eye infection. Every time I would travel, I would need to bring a whole eye care paraphernalia. I’m not complaining. But I dream of having hassle-free days and more adventures without having to worry about my contact lenses folding under my eyelids or falling off accidentally.
I knew that a LASIK procedure is an option. LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis), commonly known as laser eye surgery, is performed by an ophthalmologist who uses a laser on the eye’s cornea to improve visual acuity. A year ago, I had undergone preliminary screenings in one of the eye centers in Mandaluyong but I wasn’t able to follow through. I must admit that I’m quite scared or having doubts about the whole idea. Blindness, you know, is something that can’t be brushed off. Yes, I’m paranoid that way.

So when I met certified eye experts, worked with them in some of their commercials, my confidence grew. They told me that the procedure would be brief, painless and the effect would be immediate. It was a very good pitch.

Before the LASIK procedure, I have undergone a screening process. I came in in the morning. There were 16 steps to complete the whole process and ascertain that my eyes are perfect for LASIK. It took me almost the whole day to do every single one of them. I had to look at different machines, look at different walls. My eyes were measured, even my tears. It was very thorough.

I realized that after the screening, my eyes were more sensitive to light. But it was manageable. My take-me-everywhere-you-go sunglasses was very handy. I came in alone, did the whole test with just an iPod to entertain me, and was even able to come back to the office to finish up on some work.
Dr. Robert Ang told me that my eyes were perfect for LASIK. He briefed me about what’s going to happen come surgery. He also assured me that there’s nothing to worry about. The receptionist told me to come back the next day. So I did.

I came in an hour before my designated time. They told me to put on a lab gown. Then they asked me to sit on my designated La-Z-Boy chair. There were 3 persons before me whom I think would be undergoing the same procedure as mine. I was nervous to say the least. But since everyone was calm, I kept my cool and try to shake the nervousness off. Then they led me to a room with all the machines and an big overhead lamp. That was my moment of truth.

Dr. Ang told me to lie down and relax. He put some anesthetic drops on my eyes, then he told me that I won’t feel anything and after about 15 minutes, the procedure would be over. When they got my confirmation, they went ahead. They put a suction-like cap on my right eye, probably to spread it and prevent it from closing while the whole laser thing is happening. It wasn’t painful but the tears just kept on coming. I think it was a normal reaction of the eye for anything foreign that enters it. He told me to look at the red light. Then I smelled something burning, then it sank in. The surgery has started. I knew I wasn’t going blind because I can still see the red light. Then I heard a lady counting off “25%… 50%… 75%…” It was finished. That quick. Then they transferred to my left eye and did the same thing. Then they told me that there would be another round. This was also as quick as the first round. All in all, my eyes had 2 laser passes each. Dr. Ang was right, the time difference between clarity and blur was fifteen minutes.

They guided me to the door. It was amazing because I can now see the room clearly albeit some cloudy spots. I was amazed. Then they re-examined my eyes. When everything was good, the nurse gave me a rundown of things to do – wear protective glasses for a week (even while sleeping for three days), don’t wet the eyes for three days, no swimming for a month, follow the prescription.
So it’s been three months. I’ve done ziplines, swimming and snorkelling without fear of contact lenses popping out or folding because of the wind or water. Of course I’ve worn goggles under water but still, the hassle of having to wear glasses or clean contact lenses after a swim wasn’t present anymore. And I don’t need to bring along a whole eye care paraphernalia whenever I travel. Also, I can now fall asleep without having to remove contact lenses or be fearful of eye infections because I forgot to remove them. I now wake up to clearer mornings, literally.
Were there side effects? Some dizzy spells but very sporadic. I’m not even sure if it’s LASIK related but they told me that I might have some of these because my eyes would be adjusting to it’s new grade. They also told me that by age 40, I might have grade discrepancies again. I might need to wear reading glasses. But I’m still grateful, in our company’s annual physical exam last October, my visual acuity reads 20/20.

I have undergone bladeless LASIK at Asian Eye.

Would I recommend LASIK? Let’s just put it this way. I love the kind of freedom I have right now. Less panic. Less hassle. No need to be worried about glasses or contact lenses being left somewhere. No more bumps and bruises because I can now see things clearly even in the dark. I can dream of scuba diving and feel that it can now be a worry-free reality. I sleep with a clear view and wake up with the same. It was life-changing.

Dad’s cataract surgery experience @ Asian Eye Institute👨🏻‍⚕️
My dad was diagnosed with cataract last year. He is a patient of Asian Eye under Dr.Robert Ang since 2013. When they met again in 2020, Dr.Ang suggested that his cataracts be removed.
Pre-op: He underwent meticulous cataract screening. There were series of tests done to make sure the doctor will be able to recommend the type of intraocular lens to be implanted so my dad can have clear vision again. He also had to do undergo rt-pcr and secured clearances before the operation.
Surgery day: He was assisted by our lovable staff, nurses and doctors to make sure that his surgery will be a success. The surgery time itself was fast and painless!
Post-op: My dad’s eyes are healing well. We also found out that his eye grade dropped from 275 to 50 in his day 1 post op! And it will continue to go down as he heals. Thank you Asian Eye and Dr. Ang! Road to 20/20 vision is real!!!

    Cataract Surgery

I had held off having cataract surgery for a long, long time for two reasons: my eye doctor in Washington DC
passed away, and I was scared to undergo the procedure. I think it was more the second than the first. For 10
years, I went about my existence as a virtually blind person.

How I managed to navigate through the airports of Africa, Europe and Asia—where my job took me—is difficult to
imagine now in hindsight, and which I am inclined to attribute to a miracle.

The catalyst was a near-miss at one airport when I was mistakenly checked into a wrong flight and destination, and
I did not even notice. Luckily, the mistake was detected at the gate, and there was enough time to correct it and to
run to the right gate, so I made it to Spain.

On a recent visit to Manila, a friend mentioned the Asian Eye Institute. I immediately gathered some background
information from the AEI website and then called for an appointment. A date was confirmed with Dr. Sharlene
    Noguera.

On arrival at the AEI on the appointed date, I was required to register, which I did with the help of a cousin who
came with me (keep in mind I was blind so she completed the form on my behalf). We were then asked to wait.
The television in the waiting room blaring a local drama program almost turned me off the place. But we tuned out
the drama from our minds and focused on the form. Mercifully, we didn’t have to wait long, And any misgivings I
may have had were dispelled after the initial consultation with Dr. Noguera. Suddenly, I was face to face with
someone who knew what she was doing, and what she had to deal with. There was no question that a surgery
would ensue. I knew and expected that. What I did not expect was that Dr. Noguera would make me feel unafraid
and confident that things would all be fine. Not even my late doctor in Washington made me feel that.
I did not feel any pain or discomfort during the surgery. On the other hand, I imagine Dr. Noguera experienced
some challenges during the procedure considering the worsened state of my cataracts. The subsequent post-op
    consultations were equally reassuring.

I have since resumed my travels, and it is wonderful to be able to read signs again, appreciate colors, recognize
faces, and admire the beautiful surroundings around me.

In essence, Dr. Noguera gave me a new pair of eyes and it is due to her expertise and humane way of dealing with
patients that I am now able to lead a new life full of dynamic colors and vibrant sceneries.

    Financial Advisor

As a financial advisor, my vision, particularly in dealing with clients as they relate to numbers and computer presentations, is very important to my career.
Over the last year, I had the opportunity to discuss with various friends and business associates who have been treated by Dr. Robert Ang at the Asian Eye Institute. Therefore, I was convinced on going to Manila to have a screening done to evaluate my vision, most importantly if I needed any corrective measures. After organizing a visit at the Institute and having the screening, I was informed that I had stages of cataract in both eyes. Over the next few e-mails with Dr. Ang, he suggested surgery not only to correct this problem but also to have lenses implanted to the extent that I would have better vision. He also suggested that I look up via the Internet the FDA-approved Crystalens that would best serve my needs.
Most recently, I had the procedure done, and I must say the entire process was painless and successful to the extent that my cataract problem was solved and my vision had improved tremendously as well. From the beginning to the end over the two-week initial process, the staff and management of the Institute, especially Dr. Robert Ang, were exceptional. I felt very comfortable with the procedure in general, but also with Dr. Ang and his associates. The trust that I felt was one of the important aspects in having the procedure done. I came through this with positive results.
I strongly recommend Asian Eye Institute and Dr. Robert Ang and their staff.

“The impression one gets of AEI is that everybody has a reassuring confidence in his role in administering the medical attention sought, be it diagnosis, treatment or surgery. My cataract surgery in December, 2008 was my first surgical experience in all my seventy years at that time, and I was very anxious about the procedure. However, the calm demeanor and caring attention of the medical professionals who prepared me for surgery moderated my anxiety. Dr. Robert Edward Ang, my attending surgeon, obviously did an excellent job on my right eye because the procedure was over without my feeling any pain or discomfort. I felt so good about the experience that I had a similar surgery on my left eye this May. My friends who ask me about the surgery are amazed at how pleased I was with the experience. I tell them I can now see well enough to drive myself to the golf course and I can see the tree lined fairways and manicured greens in living color. But best of all, I can see and lovingly appreciate how kind the years have been to my wife. Thank you, AEI ! “

    Patty Laurel-Filart

    Chalazion

So just a week before my trip to South Africa, I noticed a bump forming in my under eye area. At first, I dismissed it as just an insect bite and didn’t pay any attention to it. But then 4 days passed and it was still there, growing slightly more visible and more tender to the touch. There was a small pebble-like growth forming and I had a feeling it was not just a random “bite”.

I immediately thought of Cat and Nicole’s eye treatments in Asian Eye Institute, they raved constantly about the success of their laser treatments for their vision and so I had to ask them to connect me to the best eye doctors in the country. Luckily, I was able to schedule a quick check up the following Tuesday in Asian Eye Rockwell. It was revealed during the doctor’s examination that I did develop a little cyst in my under eye area that needed to be extracted.

A lot of things can cause cysts to form in your eye area, a quick google search will tell you this: “The transfer of dirt, debris, and bacteria into or around your eyes can lead to the formation of these unsightly lumps or cysts.” I still don’t know the exact culprit–it could be anything really, from a dirty makeup brush in one of my many shoots, dust and germs from my surroundings, or small debris that entered my eye while being out and about.

If I had gone sooner perhaps it wouldn’t have been so inflamed yet that it could’ve been treated with medication. But the size and condition of the cyst was already a cause for worry and so the doctor’s advise was to do an incision to drain it out completely.

The word incision left me petrified. And the vain Patty in me was more worried about the aftermath than the actual surgery—would this leave a scar? Would it leave me black and blue? Will my right eye look bigger than the left? How will my photos look now?!?!?! GAAAH!!!! But I had to do it immediately before it would get worse so I scheduled the minor procedure for the following day—which happened to be Patrick’s birthday too! I apologized 20 times for ruining his birthday but he too felt the urgency of having it done.

On May 3 just around lunch time, I had a minor procedure done to my right eye to take out the cyst. The calm and composed Dr. Amadeo Veloso had the gentlest of hands, so light and graceful, I could barely feel anything! Mind you, I was fully awake during the whole procedure which took a brief 15 minutes. The only thing that hurt for a millisecond was the injection for anesthesia—as soon as the anesthesia took effect, Dr. Veloso started the procedure and I felt zero pain the whole time.  I was so impressed by how fast it took and how comfortable I was the whole time. I think getting parking in Rockwell may have actually taken longer (and was more painful! hahaha).

Dr. Veloso also walked me through the whole process, explaining carefully and calmly what he was going to do so I understood it well. He explained that the incision would be from the inside of the eyelid so as not to leave an unsightly scar on the outside. PHEW! Music to my ears! The nurses too were very warm and accommodating, they definitely put me at ease .

After the procedure, I was able to head home right away. They covered my eyes with a soft bandage and told me to keep it there for 4 hours. I was prescribed a full week’s worth of antibiotics and some anti-inflammatory drops. I was also told I could take some pain killers after the anesthesia wears out—but you know what, I didn’t even have to take a single tablet! My healing was absolutely pain free! It was like my eyes were back to normal in an instant. Of course, it’s really a case-to-case situation. Each person’s condition is unique and so the downtime for each patient can also differ. But I’m happy to report that I personally experienced no pain and discomfort after the procedure. The only downside was having some small swelling and a bit of bruising which quickly went away after a few days. I just steered clear of any makeup to be sure and I was wearing some hipster glasses (without grade!) to keep me looking decent for 3-4 days! Hahaha! It felt great to finally get rid of that CYST-er!!! I went in for another check up a week after and everything looked a-okay! It was a successful procedure and I could finally breathe again.

I have nothing but thanks to extend to ASIAN EYE INSTITUTE!!! To Dr. Veloso, the nurses and staff, Audrey and Cha, THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You just have no idea how much you have blessed me  And to everyone who prayed and offered some words of encouragement, thanks also! If you are experiencing any discomfort or pain in the eye area, don’t delay, have it checked immediately.

    Comprehensive Eye Exam

I began experiencing dizziness and blurred vision earlier this year. It was the mixed feelings of thrill and fear. Was it time for me to finally get prescription glasses? I’d secretly always wanted a pair because call it cliche, wearing eyeglasses sorta makes you look smarter. So I thought I’d give it more time to see if I really need to see an optometrist. A few weeks of foggy sight later, I decided to post a recommendation request on FB to see where I can have my eyesight checked.

After seeing my friends different clinic and optometrist recommendations. From generic mall kiosks to specialists, I finally decided to visit Asian Eye Institute in Trinoma

Around 15 years ago or so, I had a “refraction” just to check if my vision was still 20/20. The generic eye clinics had a basic machine and regular reading of fonts in a variety of sizes. I noticed the check-up in Asian Eye Institute was more in-depth and thorough.

Aside from the usual machine refraction, the optometrist checked my sight left and right, using different methods to see if my vision was really impaired. Not only that, they had me see another doctor to diagnose if the change in my eyesight was caused by glaucoma, cataract, etc with the use a “bump” test. She put a few drops of medicine in my eye that’s a little stingy.

It was something you’d appreciate when getting a check-up because it was really extra. You can imagine how I felt when the optometrist told me I needed to wear glasses…. THRILLED! I had a reason to wear glasses without feeling like a poseur.

Asian Eye saved me from losing my vision. If my partial retinal detachment wasn’t detected early, I would have lost my vision eventually. And for that, I’ll always be thankful.

    Charlie Mendoza

    Glaucoma

“One day, I just woke up to cloudy vision,” says 39-year-old banker, Charlie Mendoza. Since then, he would experience frequent headaches and dizziness.

“Once, I was driving along EDSA, but I couldn’t see a thing! Good thing it was traffic, so I just followed the tail lights to get to my destination,” he recalls, “I thought of changing my diet, but it didn’t work either.”

Mendoza didn’t get his eyes checked right away. But while he was taking was taking some tests at Hi-Precision Diagnostics in Power Plant Mall, he spotted EyeScan. EyeScan is an eye disease pre-screening service that can detect signs for potentially blinding eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, retinal problems and corneal and external disease.

“My EyeScan test results recommended me to immediately seek consult with a glaucoma specialist,” he says. During the consult, he found out that he had abnormally high eye pressure, a telltale sign of glaucoma. “My doctor insisted that I undergo the tests. It felt urgent. It turns out, I have glaucoma.”

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that is often linked to an increase in eye pressure. Asian Eye Institute Glaucoma Specialist Dr. Edgar Leuenberger explains, “Normally, there’s fluid that flows in and out of the eye through a mesh-like channel. When this channel gets blocked, the fluid can’t flow out at its normal rate. The pressure then builds up and damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve carries information from the eye to the brain, so any damage will be permanent and can lead to blindness.”

Glaucoma doesn’t cause any pain or discomfort at the onset. “That is why it is tagged as the silent thief of sight,” says Dr. Leuenberger, “Like Charlie, most glaucoma patients don’t have any idea they have glaucoma. It has no early warning signs, but as it progresses, they may suffer from loss of peripheral or side vision. They can also experience severe headaches, blurry vision, eye pain, eye redness or nausea. They may also see halos around lights.”

Anyone can get glaucoma. It’s more common in people over 60, but it can also develop in children or teenagers. Factors include having eye conditions like nearsightedness and farsightedness, suffering from an eye injury or surgery or taking medications, especially steroid eye drops, longer than the prescribed time.

In Mendoza’s case, he used a certain eye drop medication for years. Mendoza shares, “Before, I would suffer from chronic dry eyes and redness. I was prescribed with eye drops by another doctor, and using it comforted me. It felt like my eyes were better. I probably used it for 4 to 5 years. I didn’t know that I was only supposed to use it for a week.”

Dr. Leuenberger urges patients to check with their doctors about their eye condition and any prescribed medicine to be very particular. Most importantly, he encourages patients to monitor their eye condition regularly through an eye exam. “It pays to get an eye exam every year. The earlier we detect glaucoma, the higher the chances that we can limit vision loss or slow down its progression. There are different treatments available, such as eyedrops, lasers and other surgeries, to manage the condition.”

“It also helps to know your family’s eye health history. Glaucoma tends to run in families, so if any of your family member has it, you can develop it, too.”

Today, Mendoza goes to regular eye checkups and uses prescription eyedrops to maintain his eye pressure. “My vision is now better. I no longer have difficulty driving and when I go down the stairs, I’m not afraid that I’ll fall because I can’t see where I’m going.”

    Retinal Hole

I was a little uneasy making my decision to fix my vision. My first impression of the clinic at Mall of Asia allayed my concerns. The staff is friendly and professional. My doctors were confident and all my questions were answered with ease. The consultation was like nothing I ever experienced in Guam. I came back to Manila just to get my eyesight corrected and to fix a hole in my retina, which threatened my vision. The center at Rockwell was state-of-the-art. I had no idea the level of care I was receiving from a medical staff with the caliber of excellence attracting the trust of so many well-known people throughout Asia. I know because I was sitting with them. They all trusted Asian Eye Institute’s members and so did I. I was so excited this leading team of professionals was going to fix my vision. But I wasn’t prepared for the results.

Immediately after my surgery, I had never seen the world better in my life. I’ve always struggled with high-grade lenses and a strong astigmatism. My maternal grandmother went blind and I was afraid someday soon, I would too – until Dr. Ang and Dr. Uy fixed my eyes. I never thought it could be possible because I never could see what I can today. I can wake in the morning and see the world as it is without putting on glasses or contact lenses. I don’t have to squint at movie theatres or on the road at night. I can read a book before going to sleep and just set it down beside me without worrying about contact lenses in my eyes. I jumped up and down like a little boy who got what he wanted for Christmas. Actually, the surgery was a Christmas gift – the best I ever got. I encourage EVERYONE to get this done. There’s nothing to it. It’s the best investment you can make in your life.

    Retinal Detachment

Praise for the Asian Eye Institute !

One day when I was in Florida, I suddenly lost sight in one eye. Doctors at the two best local clinics were busy and hurried. They quickly looked at the eye and said “Wait a few weeks, and come back.”

I wanted to ask what was wrong and what could be done. The Florida doctors didn’t have time for questions. Their dismissive attitude even made me wonder if they really knew what to do.

Did I want to entrust my eye to doctors who couldn’t take a few minutes to tell me what was happening? I remembered the Asian Eye Institute in Rockwell, and I got on a plane to Manila.

At the Asian Eye Institute, Dr. Amadeo Veloso and his superb staff had time to hear my questions and give me answers. Dr. Veloso told me I had a detached retina. He explained the available treatment procedures in layman’s terms that I could follow. And he was completely open. The treatment would take several months. He even gave me a detailed schedule of what to expect.

Over the next months as I had frequent appointments at Asian Eye, I got to know the office and people quite well. The management of every detail is carefully planned and beautifully executed. Nothing is forgotten, and nothing is left to chance.

AEI’s people are outstanding professionals. They provide extra-ordinary levels of expert medical care, human concern and gentle encouragement. I never imagined that I would enjoy going in for eye exams and treatments. But AEI has changed that. Now I look forward with pleasure to seeing Dr. Veloso and other AEI doctors, nurses and technicians. All of them are quietly impressive in their competence, efficiency and devotion to patient care. And remarkably, no one is ever too busy to answer questions.

Best of all for me, my eye can see again!

If you want absolutely the best ophthalmological care, and if you’d like to receive it from people who treat you with respect and kindness, the Asian Eye Institute is the place for you.

    Ortho-K

Before my consultation at Asian Eye, I experienced difficulty in reading the lessons projected on the screen during class. Wearing eyeglasses everyday gave me discomfort. Having poor eye sight prevented me to excel in what I love doing the most, swimming and basketball. My mother and I visited Asian Eye to know the possible solution or treatment that I can have. Thanks to the brilliant team of Dr. Jesse Caguioa who introduced Ortho-K to us. With Ortho-K contact lens, everything is possible. During my first few days with Ortho-K, I experienced a little uneasiness when I sleep. But there was no pain. I got used to it after several days of use and started to get active in swimming again. I can now see clearly without my eyeglasses. I can now easily recognize my professors and friends even at a far distance.

At Asian Eye, I feel belonged. People from the reception to the doctors were accommodating and very patient in explaining Ortho-K to us. They always made me feel that I am in good hands. I am glad I referred my friends to Asian Eye. I also want them to feel the same enjoyment I am experiencing now — eyeglass-free!
