CXL is a preventative measure against the further thinning or bulging of the cornea due to certain diseases (like keratoconus) or other factors. The treatment is minimally invasive and is pivotal in maintaining the natural shape of the cornea. If it is successful, patients will no longer have to undergo corneal transplants.
CXL is an outpatient procedure. Your doctor will first numb your eyes, preventing you from feeling any discomfort during the entire process. Afterward, the outer layer of the cornea or epithelium will be removed before the medicine is applied directly to the cornea. You are expected to fully recover after a few weeks.
