What Our Previous Patients Say

Believe me, this is the best life-changing decision ever!!!! Finally, I got my ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery done to correct my vision. Never knew how it is going to be(as this is a new technology to cure astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia), but I was very clear on what to expect–20/20 vision without the help of contact lenses or eyeglasses which I have been wearing for more than 30 years. Now I’m living the dream with my brand new eyes! Thanks so much for working your magic on me, Dr. Robert Ang, the Chair of Refractive Surgery of @asianeyeinstitute! I can only entrust my eyes to you and to my whole Asian Eye Institute family, who assisted me with ease during the entire procedure!! I’m still recovering but can’t hide my excitement to see the world in a new light! #day1postop #implantablecollamerlens #milestoneunlocked #tgbtg #asianeyeinstitute

And of course, expected natin, expected ko, na in a few months ay talagang, wow! Ang ganda na talaga ng vision ko. Alam ninyo po, 5 years akong nagsuot ng eyeglasses. Bilang ako’y isang nanay na napaka-active, talagang sagabal sa akin ang naka-eyeglasses. It’s my choice na magpa-LASIK, magpa-eye surgery.  Kaya ngayon naman, sa wakas, ay nagawa ko na. Matagal kong panahon na plinano o pinangarap na magpa-eye surgery. Since nag-40 ako, talagang lumabo na po lahat. So it’s been 5 years na ako ay naka-eyeglasses. Ngayon, wala na at kitang-kita ko na kayo. Kaya maraming, maraming salamat, Dr. Robert Ang, for taking care of my eyesight. Thank you very much, Asian Eye Institute.

I’ve been wearing glasses and contacts since I was a little girl and I’ve been looking to correct my vision without any surgery for yeeaaaarrss! To make things worse, I recently learned that I was allergic to the contacts and eye drops brand that I was using – for yeeaaaarss – leaving my eyes itchy and dry all the time And how did I learn about all this? It’s all thanks to Dr. Jesse Caguioa and the @asianeyeinstitute with the introduction of Ortho-K lenses! These are special contacts that are worn overnight. It gently reshapes yours corneas, making you see clearly the following day! It helps correct nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness, and has even been shown to slow down the progression of myopia in children. I woke up 3am this morning, took a shower and prayed for Eddie’s successful cataract eye surgery scheduled at 6am today at the world-class Asian Eye Institute (Rockwell Branch) with Dr. Robert Edward Ang, the best in his field. Cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens which causes foggy vision, difficulty seeing at night and sensitivity to light and glare. If left untreated, It may lead to it may lead to reversible blindness. Eddie got clearance from Healthcube Medical Clinic which provides the best, personalized outpatient health care. Thank you, Daisy, for assisting us. After 4 hours of praying and waiting, Eddie came out of the operating room with a big smile. His right eye can see clearly now! We will be back for the left eye. ❤️ Thank you Dr. Ang, all the nurses and staff of Asian Eye Institute who took care of my Eduardo. It is a Happy Valentine’s Day indeed!! ❤️

LASIk

What Makes Someone an Ideal Candidate For LASIK?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or better known as LASIK, is extremely popular for a reason. Its high success rate and generally quick and painless intervention, coupled with the fact that it only requires 10 to 20 minutes to perform, attracts approximately 700,000 patients  each year globally. With minimal downtime, someone could possibly have surgery today and be able to get back to work within two to three days.

The surging demand for new eye treatments in Asia-Pacific highlights the increased value of LASIK, as well. In the Philippines, with the prevalence of visual impairment at 3.64%, LASIK has become a leading solution among Filipinos with errors of refraction. Those with nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or even presbyopia are just one LASIK appointment away from sharper vision. With that said, other variables must be considered before a patient is recommended LASIK.

Oftentimes, the procedure is done for individuals with an eye grade that ranges from 100 to 600, with astigmatism up to 400. The usual patient profile, too, is someone between the ages of 18 and 39 (eye grade, after all, stabilizes around the age of 18). But Asian Eye Institute’s Refractive Surgery Department Director Dr. Robert T. Ang says that, of all things, each case relies on comprehensive screening to ensure a successful outcome.

a patient under eye examination

“Our main goal is to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our patients. That is why we require them to undergo a three- to four-hour LASIK screening,” he says. This is done so that doctors can thoroughly check a patient’s corneal thickness and curvature, and if they have other eye conditions that may be affecting their vision.

Eye grade, of course, isn’t the only factor specialists like Dr. Ang consider in the screening process. “We also check their corneal thickness, eye health, eye history, and even their lifestyle,” he explains. “If they have a retinal problem or cataract, we need to address it first before we proceed with the surgery.”

Meanwhile, women who are pregnant or nursing are advised to postpone surgery. Hormone changes affect the shape of the cornea, which then leads to changes in the eye grade. In these instances, it is best to wait until their hormonal levels are back to normal and their eye grade is stable.

Alternatively, patients with thinner corneas, severe dry eyes, extremely high eye grade, and other eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal disease might be more suited to explore other options.

If someone doesn’t qualify for LASIK, Asian Eye reassures us that there are other treatments available. This includes transepithelial PRK or Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL). ICL actually offers the highest quality vision among all refractive options.

“It (ICL) is similar to a contact lens, but is inserted inside the eye. It does not require maintenance like regular contact lenses do, and is best for night driving as it has minimal glares and halos,” the award-winning doctor notes.

At the end of the day, LASIK frees people from the inconveniences of wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses. Those who are used to adjusting their routines to their eyeglasses can get more out of their schedules. Contact lens wearers, on the other hand, no longer have to suffer from recurring eye redness, dry eyes, or infection.

“I actually have had patients who do LASIK because they want to become an athlete, go for military training, or become a flight attendant or a pilot,” Dr. Ang concludes. “Simply put, it’s just a lot easier for you to do things.”

Understanding Myopia and Ortho-K

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision problems today. And it’s only more prevalent in Asia, with studies showing that more than 80% of children and young adults are affected.

Nearsightedness is caused by an irregularity in the shape of the eyeball. The eyeball is supposed to be round, but for myopic people, it is slightly elongated. As a result, you may experience blurry vision when looking at an object from a distance.

People with myopia might have trouble recognizing faces or reading small texts, especially if they are at a considerable distance from the person or item they are looking at.  If left unmanaged, high myopia can increase the risk of serious eye diseases like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.

The good news? With help from specialists, myopia can be managed through several treatment options. The goal is to not just to correct vision, but also to slow its progression.

What Experts Recommend

Eye care specialists recommend early intervention and regular eye exams as the best way to manage myopia and prevent it from worsening.

Common options offered by eye care specialists include specialized eyeglass lenses, contact lenses such as Orthokeratology (Ortho-K), and medicated eye drops like low-dose atropine to slow progression. Meanwhile, older patients with stable prescriptions can opt to choose refractive surgeries such as LASIK or Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL).

Optical Treatments for Myopia

Prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses are one of the common ways to manage myopia. However, this correction method has some limitations, considering that these visual aids are quite easy to misplace or damage. Today, advanced myopia control lenses can help slow down eye elongation in children.

An alternative is undergoing surgery. The available procedures can be quite costly, though, so they might not be the right option for those on a tight budget.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

asian-ophthalmologist-examines-childs-vision

For adults with stable prescriptions, procedures like LASIK and PRK permanently help reshape the cornea for clear vision. Ortho-K has also shown that it can deter myopia progression in kids up to 18 years old, making it a safe and effective alternative to LASIK. In many cases, myopia starts at an early age and can be properly diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam.

Interestingly, orthokeratology was actually developed to help control myopia in children and delay its progression. It works by gently reshaping the cornea to help the eyes focus properly on objects no matter the distance.

Special contact lenses, called ortho-k contact lenses, are worn at night for about six hours while you are sleeping. In the morning, when you wake up, you can take the lenses off and immediately notice how you can see clearly even without them.

If you are eligible, your eyes will then be thoroughly examined so doctors can get their exact measurements. The topography of your cornea will be determined to help eye care providers create custom-fit orthokeratology lenses.

Post-Surgery Expectations: What to Expect After LASIK Surgery

One of the biggest benefits of LASIK is how quickly results can be seen. Most patients notice an improvement in their vision just a few hours after the procedure. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, more than 90% of patients achieve 20/20 vision, while 99% reach 20/40 vision or better. Yes, good enough to drive without glasses!

But the lingering question is, what happens after LASIK surgery? This is where we come in. We’re here to reassure you and tell how you can better care of your eyes during recovery.

Managing Common LASIK Side Effects

Optometry, tablet and optician with man for results, communication and consulting about vision. Healthcare, medical and ophthalmologist talking to a patient about eye care after an exam with tech

Some LASIK patients will report dryness and light sensitivity during their recovery period. In fact, about 95% of patients report dry eyes during the first month after surgery. Others may also report a mild burning sensation. Doctors usually prescribe lubricating eye drops to combat the irritation.

Common temporary side effects may include dry eyes, glare, halos, and night vision disturbances. Your vision may continue to improve and stabilize over the next few weeks. Full recovery may take about three to six months, so regular follow-ups with your ophthalmologist are important to monitor your healing.

LASIK Surgery Long-Term Results

LASIK is designed to be long-lasting. Studies show that 94% of patients remain glasses-free five years after surgery. However, natural age-related changes like presbyopia (difficulty reading up close) may still occur in your 40s or 50s. This is a normal part of aging, not a sign that LASIK is wearing off.

In some cases, a small number of patients may need an enhancement procedure, especially if there’s a slight regression in vision. This is usually safe and effective when done by an experienced surgeon.

Nevertheless, more and more Filipinos are leaning towards LASIK because of its high success rate. Adding to its wider appeal is the relatively quick and painless procedure, as it also only requires 10 to 20 minutes to perform.

In a country like the Philippines, where the prevalence of visual impairment at 3.64%, specialists like Asian Eye Institute Head of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Services Dr. Robert T. Ang considers it a foolproof way to improve overall quality of life. It also helps to have the latest generation Victus Femtosecond Laser and Teneo 2 Excimer Laser, each sourced from German manufacturer Bausch and Lomb.

checkup and preparation for lasik surgery

“Having an ultrafast laser speed shortens the treatment time. This means that we lessen the evaporation time and drying of the cornea,” explains Dr. Ang. “This also means that patients don’t have to be anxious during surgery, and there are lesser chances that they will move during the procedure.”

One of the best things about the advanced tracker technology is that it detects and adjusts to all eye movements. “So even if your eye moves up or down, left or right, the laser pulses will be fired in the correct location each time.” Iris Registration, on the other hand, ensures that your treatment will never be applied to another patient’s eyes.”
