ST. FRANCES CABRINI MEDICAL CENTER - ASIAN EYE INSTITUTE ETHICS REVIEW COMMITTEE

The SCMC-AEI Ethics Review Committee reviews research proposals and their data to ensure they adhere to local and international ethical guidelines. It also monitors studies when they begin and may participate in follow-up actions after the end of the research study.

SCMC-AEI Ethics Review Committee:
How Do We Protect Patients' Rights and Welfare?

The SCMC-AEI Ethics Review Committee is responsible for ensuring the protection of the rights, safety, and welfare of study participants and the whole community. It provides ethical reviews for all clinical, operational, and policy research projects in the Philippines based on local and international standards and guidelines.

Mission

We deliver to all stakeholders a standard of ethical review based on national and international ethical standards and guidelines protecting the welfare of Filipino and regional patients.

Vision

In the next five years, SCMC-AEI ERC will be a reviewer of clinical, operational, and policy studies in the Philippines.

Humble Beginnings

Established in 2002, the committee has reviewed over 100 research studies – both sponsored clinical trials and investigator-initiated research. 11 years later, it expanded its scope by reviewing health policies and operational studies.

Creating an Ethics Committee

Asian Eye Institute sets its sights on creating a more independent, diverse, and well-rounded committee. We partnered with St. Frances Cabrini Medical Center (SCMC), an accredited third-level referral hospital in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, that specializes in cancer and organ transplant services. This partnership allows both institutions to review research studies that concern overall health.

Accreditation From PHREB

In March 2016, the SCMC-AEI Ethics Review Committee was granted Level 3 Accreditation by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB). The organization develops standards and guidelines to ensure that ethics review committees are efficient and effective.
